CROSS COUNTRY COMPETES AT BANDERA
On Saturday, August 20, 2022, the Utopia High School varsity boys cross country team competed in a field of more than twenty-four teams at the Bandera cross country relays. The team of Luke Leavelle and Jaxon Lopez finished fourth overall. The second team from Utopia ran into hard times and were not able to complete the race, but both participants, Taylor Wiekamp and Fischer McCarty, gave it all they had. In the JV Division the team of Braydon Long and Lawson Leavelle finished fifth in a field of fifteen.
REPORT FROM THE LEAKEY VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT
Friday and Saturday the Utopia High School volleyball teams participated in a two-day tournament in Leakey.
During Friday’s pool play the varsity team was victorious over Comstock, Leakey, and Brackettville. These victories allowed the varsity team to be seeded first in pool B.
Saturday the Varsity girls started the day with a win against La Pryor and moved qualified to play in the semifinal round. Utopia lost to Sabinal in the semifinal game, but still played for third place against Leakey. In the battle for third place the ladies beat out Leakey to receive a third-place trophy. The ladies play very well both days! Meagan Cole, Kylie Bomer, and Chloe Chamness had multiple kills. Libero, Kinsley Cox, had another outstanding passing game. The Moore sisters also played well with Lillie setting and Hallie hitting and blocking middle in the middle. Bella Bownds shored up the left side as the outside hitter and had great serves. Haley Perez was clutch coming in at crucial times both days. These girls are gaining confidence every match and best of all they are coming together as a team!
The JV played Leakey, Harper, and Brackettville and was seeded 3rd after day one.
The JV ladies played well on Saturday beating their first opponent before losing in the semifinals to a very tough Harper team. The JV defeat their final opponent, Junction, to place 3rd overall in the JV division. Taya Bohannan and Nicole Duke were key as middle blockers. Jayci Barfield-Vasquez did a good job as setter. Chloe Matocha had a great day serving and Riley McCutcheon is improving everyday as Libero. Honorable mention for Lizzie Hyr, Kyla Plance and Olivia.
